Overview

English Listening (betterme.site) is a free tool for practising listening by dictation with YouTube videos. There are no accounts and we don't ask for your name, email or any other personal details. This page explains what data is involved when you use the site.

Data stored in your browser

Your settings, practice progress, recently opened videos and imported transcripts are saved in your browser's localStorage. This data stays on your device and is never sent to our server. You can delete it at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser settings, or with Reset progress for a single video.

Data our server receives

When you load a video, your browser sends its YouTube URL and the chosen caption language to our server, which fetches the captions from YouTube. Like most web servers, ours may keep short-lived technical logs (IP address, request URL, time, browser type) to keep the service running and to fix errors. We don't use these logs to identify you and we don't sell or share them.

Transcripts imported with the 📌 bookmark are passed to the app in the page address and stay in your browser; they are not stored on our server.

Advertising (Google AdSense)

We use Google AdSense to show ads, which keeps the site free. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your previous visits to this and other websites.

Visitors in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland are asked for consent before personalised ads are shown, and can change their choice at any time from the consent message.

Other third-party services

Children

The site is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them.
